Italy Day 14

So this is the last day of our trip and my last travel journal for it - tomorrow will be a long day of flights and grumpy people, but we will be home by  12 AM EST on Sunday morning if not a few minutes before.  I miss my kitties, my bed, and my pillow.

But it's important to not skip past today in our rush to get home because it was good.   Admittedly all of us were tempted to skip and stay home but we went and despite the heat I'm grateful.  We started the day with a trip to Monreal to see the Norman Cathedral.   The walk was uphill so we paid for a taxi to take the three of us vs. walking; it was fun  - these taxis go on roads the bus can't and they zip here and there with such speed, yet never hitting anything - it amazes me.   I mean some of the places they fit cars into are just - WOW.

Once at the top we took a few pictures and bought a couple of souvenirs while we waited on everyone else.   Then we went into the Cathedral which was dark but loaded with gold-looking mosaics that were really incredible.  Nothing was painted - they were tiny pieces of stone to make these gorgeous stories from the bible in picture form.   I prefer lighter churches that bring joy and this one had a darker feel to it but it was magnificent.

We then meandered down the hill everyone walked up and did some souvenir shopping and just enjoyed our visit.  Several of the shop owners were Indian and wanted to haggle so I didn't get a couple of things I wanted - I hate haggling.  But we did get a couple of gifts for family at this one cute shop and the guy was so nice.

Then we drove down the hill to another Cathedral which had been stripped of all the baroque influence and was light with paintings and marble.  It had a lot of light and I thought it was beautiful.

Then we headed to a market - and she was going to show us another church but by that time everyone was hot and miserable so we just skipped the church and walked around the market.  I expected a vendor market; instead, it was a vegetable/meat/fish market and it was crowded and busy with fish smell in the heat.... so yea not my favorite.  That being said the vegetables and fruits looked so amazing; so much healthier than what we see back home.   I don't like crowds and I hate the smell of fish so we found a restaurant and sat down.

It was kinda cool - they had this buffet-type thing where you pointed to what you wanted; then they brought it to you at the table.  I had pasta in a spinach leaf; fried onions; sauteed mushrooms; and a Caprese salad - it was all delicious!   If it wasn't for the heat I would have said it was perfect.

We then wandered out and found the rest of our group at another restaurant that served gelato - so we grabbed one and sat down while we waited for the others.   A breeze was blowing a bit which helped, but still, it was miserable hot.

We then went back to the bus and came back to the hotel for a siesta before dinner.

Before going to dinner we went to a palace and were met by a Prince.   They need help with paying for the upkeep so they have opened it up to the public.  He gave us a mini-tour and then served us ice cream and peach tea.   The home was neat and he has some amazing pieces of furniture and chandeliers.   From the outside you wouldn't have really known it was a palace, but once inside the walls...   I actually enjoyed it and he seemed nice.  His mother normally gives the tours but she was in hospital so he gave it and the niece and nephew helped with the ice cream as the butler had an injury.   Yes - the butler...   It was great.

We had taken another taxi to the palace but we walked back with the group to the restaurant.   We took pictures and walked on streets busting with people.  The cities here are just alive in a way I have never experienced in the States.  It's an energy that is palpable and contagious - I love it.

Dinner was excellent and we once again sat with Jim and his wife Joan.  They really are amazing people and I do really hope we stay in touch.     Now I'm going to try and get an hour or two of sleep - we have to leave at 3 AM to catch our flight...

Thank good thoughts for us tomorrow!

Italy Day 13

We left the resort this morning on our way to Palermo - it was a super early start and I hated to leave the ocean view behind, but alas it was time.   Most of the day was driving with a couple of bathroom/lunch stops and one stop at the Valley of Temples.  That place was really cool with an intact Greek temple that was still original without having to be rebuilt; it had been converted to a church and therefore saved.   It was hot - really hot, but a breeze was blowing and the majority of it was downhill.   So while it was miserable it was doable for Mama.   I think she enjoyed it despite the heat.

The drive over here from the coast was dotted with gorgeous landscapes and just picturesque scenery.

Once we got to Palermo I was once again taken away by how dirty the cities are; trash is just everywhere.   Part of it is they don't really care and part of it is the Mafia controls trash collection.  The trash-collecting by the bins - Mafia's fault where they are teaching someone a lesson.  The trash littering the streets - is just not something that concerns them.  It makes me sad.

After a brief rest, we left for a seafood dinner with all kinds of fish.  Jack stayed away and had alternative choices, but I tried everything - some of which I could recognize.  I had octopus, squid, swordfish, shrimp, cod, and then 2 or three things I had no idea what they were.  I can't say it was my favorite meal, but I tried it and enjoyed the company.

Afterward, there was a gorgeous sunset on the water that was just fabulous.

We then drove back, Mama went to bed and Jack and I wandered down to the city center.  It was 9:30 at night and the streets were alive with markets, families, and couples strolling - it was great.  This, I told Jack is Italy - not the tourist sights, but this - the heart.   I bought some sea glass earrings from a local vendor that will probably turn my ears green and we headed back to get some rest.

Tomorrow we tour Palermo and some areas around it.    Until then - sleep well.

Italy Day 12

This morning we began our day with breakfast at the hotel as normal before heading up to Mt Etna.   This is an active volcano and was extremely interesting.  On our way up to the Volcano, we stopped at Zafferana Etna.  It was a little town with an amazing overlook and an awesome church named Chiesa Madre Di Santa Maria Della Provvidenza.  It was really pretty and welcoming with white ceilings white marble floors and just well nice.  The doors were also unique.  They had these great carvings on them and would open all the way to the top with was probably 10 - 15 feet - then behind that were the glass ones that could also open.   It was a nice brief stop and allowed everyone to also go to the bathroom before we headed on up to the volcano.

The volcano itself was extremely cool.  The black lava rock was pretty and the flowers popping up out of it were beautiful.  The records are such that they can tell you which lava was from which eruption - this is 2003 lave, this 1642 lava (or something like that)... I didn't pay too much attention other than it was pretty and the views amazing.  I love how vegetation is here everywhere and it's not tamed and 1/2 of it produces an edible fruit of some type.   Mama and I walked in tandem with her O2 on my back which is always an adventure, but the rock was going to be difficult with her little cart and her back hasn't been 100% here so off we went.  It makes for lots of laughs if nothing else.

After the volcano, we headed to a jewelry store, Girrae and they showed us how jewelry was made.   They, of course, offered discounts to buy but I had no desire to spend 1000 euros on earrings even if they were gorgeous.   They then served us lunch on a veranda.  The food was good but I didn't care for the atmosphere - I know Globus had some type of deal with them and they weren't feeding us for free, but given I didn't buy anything it felt off.   My own mental thing... but that being said the food was good.   Jack and Mama tried a coke which apparently was horrible but everything I had was amazing.

And then we came back to the hotel and I promptly took a nap - a long nap.   After waking up we went to the store to exchange some clothes Mama bought me yesterday for my birthday.  The ones she got were not sized ok but I got this gorgeous green skirt and a black one that I just love.   And the shopkeeper made the experience fun!  I was the center of attention as they helped me pick out clothes, at first it felt weird but I got into it and had a great time.

We then came back to the hotel, sat on the patio, and visited with a few from our tour group before heading to a nice relaxing dinner at a local restaurant called Skida - I had a light bruschetta and Caprese salad which was perfect.  Plus we were outside and it was just relaxing with some conversation and some silence which I think we all need.    As an introvert at heart, I need a couple of people's free days when we get home.

We are about to get the bags together for the night as we leave this palace early tomorrow for Palermo. It's a long day of traveling with an archaeological site along the way.  It is supposed to be hot so pray Mama's breathing is ok - or even better pray it isn't as hot as they say it will be.

TIl tomorrow, sleep well.

Italy Day 11

Today was Syracuse and Ortigia.  Mama opted out of this excursion and decided to rest so it was just me and Jack, but of course, first, we ate breakfast at the hotel buffet.   It was funny they had the toast machine together incorrectly so Jack fixed it and taught them how to use it... in English - when they spoke Italian.  It was humurous.

The drive to Syracuse was about 1.5 hours so I enjoyed the scenery on the way over.  The tour guide was fairly interesting and had an interest in horticulture so we learned about the plants as well as the historical location.   The archaeological site was mainly a set of mines that were hand chiseled out by slaves for the limestone, this created massive caves that were fairly interesting to see.  There was also an amphitheater that is the original greek seats.   They had them covered as it is in the season and they are actually putting on plays in the original Greek style; they covered them so ladies' heels, etc... do not damage them.

I must say the heat was a bit much - I'm grateful Mama didn't come as she would have been suffering.  Toward the end, we sat down and a stray cat saw Jack get his water bottle out and ran to him - Jack gave him water from his hand which he happily drank and then cleaned himself.  It was so sweet.

After this, we drove down to Ortigia which was really a bunch of nothing. There were some greek columns in the middle and then you walk down this road to a big plaza with a Greek Temple to Athena which has been converted into a church.  It was pretty but by this time we were hot, hungry and sick of hearing this guy talk about Greek Columns.  If he said it 1 time he said it 10 times that the church was not what was interesting; it was the Greek Columns.  I swear I wanted him to eat a Greek Column by the time we were done.

Jack and I then walked down to the waterfront and took a few pictures before trying to find something to eat.  And then we had the classic - what do you want, I don't care what do you want, I don't care.  Ok let's eat here - no I don't want that discussion.  This is why I always research restaurants ahead of time.  We stopped at this one place for pizza but they never waited on us so we used their bathrooms and left.  We ended up getting an ice cream and then grabbing this fried rice thing.  It was sooo good - it's a common food in the area and it was delicous!

We then got on the bus and I slept almost the whole hour and a half back to the hotel.

I got a shower - we met up with Mama who really enjoyed her day of rest and then we headed out for a delicious dinner with the group.   After dinner, Mama and I walked down the beach to these rocks left over from the lava.  They were so warm to the touch - it was awesome.

By the time we got back we were both tired - the sand is rock here and rough to walk on.

So now it's time for bed before we go see a volcano tomorrow.   Sleep well guys :)

Italy Day 10

Today we got to sleep a bit late and didn't leave the hotel until 8:30 - I know.   We got to eat breakfast in the upstairs dining room again - you sit and overlook the Volcano Edna and the best view of the mountains; it's great!

Then we drove a few miles to the ferry crossing where the entire bus was loaded to cross the Strait Messina to the island of Sicily.  We all unloaded for the 20 min boat ride, got a drink, went to the bathroom, and enjoyed crossing the water.  I love boat rides.  We sat up top, took a few pictures, and enjoyed the moment.

As we drove off the ferry our guide, Nicolas, informed us once again about the stronghold the Mafia has down here and warned us to not really talk about it.  The people don't find the conversations endearing.   It's kinda sad - the hold they have that keeps this area from thriving.  It was also kinda scary that we were informed the Mafia knew our names and identities the minute we checked in yesterday - I mean they value tourism but EEK.

The island though is pretty.   We went to this little area called the Taormina Riviera - it was a bit uphill, but Mama stayed with us and we went to see the ancient Greek Theater.  She made it to the floor of the theater and had a seat on some rocks overlooking the volcano and city below; it is gorgeous.  Jack and I headed on up to the next layer for the ultimate view.  It is really amazing the view and the theater itself was cool as well.

After our viewing party, we meandered down to do some souvenir shopping and to eat lunch.   It is a bit of a touristy area with shops everywhere, but at the same time, it was nice.   I enjoyed myself and it would have been perfect had the temperature just been a couple of degrees lower, but regardless we enjoyed ourselves.

We sat at this cafe and had lunch.  I had a Caprese salad, Jack had a panini and Mama had a hamburger.   It was great and it was in the shade.   I went to the bathroom and had to go down the oddest elevator ever to get there.   You got in, pressed the button, and nothing - you think it's stuck.  I mean it's absolutely silent.  You press the button more and suddenly you are down a floor unaware it ever moved, lol.

Jack and I left Mama at the restaurant while we went down a bit further and got a few pictures of the courtyard and the church.

After leaving the Riviera we made our way to our hotel which is astonishing.  It looks like a villa and our room overlooks the pool and the sea - with a balcony.  Mama is skipping the excursion tomorrow and will get to stay here and relax; I'm jealous.     We had the afternoon free today and I took a nap while Jack read his book on our balcony.  We then went down to dinner at a local restaurant and I followed Mama's example from lunch and got a hamburger, it was amazing!

Now we rest - our excursion leaves tomorrow at 8:15.   Til then!

Italy Day 9

Today was largely a travel day and it was good.  I couldn't keep my eyes open on the bus; I would have loved to look at the scenery because the fields of wheat, olives, and other fruits were gorgeous as was the occasional sea viewing, but my eyes closed more often than not.

Breakfast this morning was amazing, it was out on the patio and the atmosphere was nice.   We left super early; so I can't say I was in the best mood but the atmosphere was nice.

We then drove a few hours to Matera.  It was a town largely built inside of caves with facades on the front to make it look like buildings.  It was mainly a brief picture stop with a restroom break, but we did go into the bathrooms, which were in a cave as well as a souvenir shop, in a cave.  Everything is in caves here.

After this, we got back on the bus and drove another couple of hours to a truck stop for lunch.  I know not fancy, but it's largely a travel day and it was actually nice.  We had 40 minutes and the food was reasonable, the atmosphere quiet and well - I thought it was kinda perfect.  Just plain and simple.  I had a pizza and tried a dessert thing. The pizza was ok, but the dessert was yucky lol.   Food adventurer, I am not.

We then drove another couple of hours to Pizzo Calabro.  It was a close call as the driver made a wrong turn (due to a policeman waving him on) and got on some streets he really didn't fit on.  He had to back up and almost got us stuck between two buildings, but man he is amazing and we got out of it and on our way.   We parked and then walked down this steep incline to the city area for a Tartufo. It is an ice cream chocolate dessert that was really rich.  I liked it but could only eat a tiny bit.   We then went and took some pictures before going back to the bus.  Due to the steep incline we got these little carts to take us back up - they were 5 euros each and they were so much fun.  He took us around the city at like 40 miles an hour on these motor carts with 3 people in the back trolly and he sang.  He and the other driver were honking back and forth music to each other - it was so much fun!   It may be one of my favorite moments of the trip.

We then headed to our hotel in Calabria.  This area is largely run by the mafia and much of it is not good to be in, but where we are is safe and the hotel seems nice.   There is a walk by the sea and the people on Sundays go promenade much like you read about in English Victoria.

Once here we got checked in and went to see the Broniz di Riace sculptures at the museum.  They were awesome, the guide that droned on about them for an hour was not - I mean how much can you say about two sculptures.  I tuned him out and just took my pictures.   They were cool though.

Jack and I then went for a brief walk on the promenade and got ready for dinner.   Dinner was on the rooftop garden, which was gorgeous and Mama was happy because it was basically beef tenderloin with potatoes.   As close to southern as you will see over here.  After dinner, Jack and I went next door and got gelato and now we are getting ready for a good night's sleep.  I hope you all are well.

Italy Day 8

Today was really special.  We got up and Mama's back was spasming - it started bad last night and I'll be honest I was worried it was going to be a rough day, but once again God provided.   The meds and oils and gels we have with us were all applied and thank the good Lord they worked.   We ate breakfast and then headed out to a small village Alberobello.

This place is so amazing.  It's all these little huts built with nothing but stone.  There are two walls - one on the outside that is only stone and then one on the inside that is finished and super nice.   They would dig out from under all the rock and the space under the home held the water they stored in the rainy season.  Up until the time of WW2 they had no running water and even after that the area was in abject poverty.

Then it came to light that during the later part of the 19th century that these people lived in 3rd world conditions; Italy's little dirty laundry.  So they forced the people out of their homes -those that couldn't have a bathroom added and were not too small and put them in a form of gov't housing.   It was "better" for them, and probably right.  But if you are in your home one day and being forced out the next - is it really better?

Some residents still live in the area; their trullios were large enough or could have a bathroom added.   We met a couple today.   Some have embraced tourism and others hate us, but we do bring money into the area and that is good.   The town itself is just ... well charming isn't the word, it is, but it's so much more.  I'd love to spend a weekend in this little village.  It was so cute.

We went into one of the Trullio buildings and it really was nice.  The couple that owned it were so welcoming and make their money by opening their former home.  They now live in an apartment nearby.   One of their neighbors still lives there and had his door open with cherries for us to try if we donated money; it's the crop his family produces.   They were so yummy and his little courtyard was amazing.

I could seriously just stay here and our tour guide was just awesome.  I normally tune them out after 10 minutes, but he really grabbed my interest and I actively listened while taking my photos.

After the guide, we meandered into the commercial section where many houses have been converted into little shops.  We bought a few things and then sat down and had a gelato and enjoyed the day.

We then hopped back on the bus and came back to the hotel.   WE needed a few lady necessities so I used google translate to ask the receptionist and she sent us to the pharmacy 20 minutes away; well 25.  I asked Jack if he wanted to go and he said do I need to or can I stay here to which I answered "do you trust me to wander off in a strange country by myself......." no other words were needed as he hopped up and helped me find my way.  For those that don't know I get lost in my own kitchen.

We walked all the way to the pharmacy to only find them closed, but right next to it was a grocery store and they had what we needed + some.  We ended up also getting water and snacks.   I felt like I was taking a tour of their everyday life and I loved it.

You pay for your bags here, 10 cents each, and the cashier checks out 2 lanes at once.    It really is a cool system.

Once we made our way back I got a shower and got off my feet for a few before we headed out again.   we drove to a little town called Locorotondo and it was so cute.  The "promenade" which is a walkway along the scenic farmland was just breathtaking.  And then we meandered through the tiny town for a few minutes before heading to dinner.  I really did love it!

Afterward, we went to a local Masseria and were treated to a live show from their cultural past by some young people before dinner.  And the dinner - Oh my heavens.  So much food!  Just the appetizers were 10 different dishes, enough for everyone to try everything.  Then we had pasta with roast beef, then salad, then the meat course followed by fruit!  It was soooo much food and oh so good.  In the end, they brought out this cherry liquor that tasted like cough syrup, lol.  Other than that everything was really good and the atmosphere was amazing.  We were the only group and we were sat outside under the grapevines overlooking the landscape.  It was really really amazing!   Such a special night.

Now it's time for a good night's sleep and an early day tomorrow.   We have to be ready by 6:45.     So good night!

Italy Day 7

Today was so beautiful. The weather was perfect, no rain, cool breeze, and just great!   We started the day out by checking into our hotels, eating breakfast at the hotel, and doing a walking tour of the historical section of Bari.

The tour guide took us to see several churches, through the historic streets where people still live and were starting their days and well it was just nice.   There are ladies that still make homemade pasta and we got to see them starting to set up.    We went inside both of the churches Bari is really known for, the Cathedral of San Nicola which was very simple on the inside due to the baroque decorations being removed.  Though the lower portion still had quite a lot of baroque influence.  And the Basilica di San Nicola which was quite stunning.   I wandered around taking pictures of both while most of the group sat and listened to the guide.   I enjoyed my visit more I bet :)   I could still hear her..

After our city tour, we grabbed a bite at a local cafe.  I ordered a simple ham and cheese sandwich and we just sat and enjoyed not being on our feet.   After lunch, we wandered over to the waterline to meet up with our group.    The water was so pretty and blue - the coastlines here are really quite pretty.

Once with our group, we rode a couple of hours to Lecce where we got another walking tour.  Our tour guide for this one was German and you could tell - she was no non-sense and did not wait on you no matter what.   She walked so fast I missed many pictures, but at the same time she showed us things not on typical tours, so give and take.   I liked her explanation of things and the fact she didn't ramble on every second.

She took us into a small 230-person theater that most people don't get to see.

She also took us into a small church off of the courtyard from Palazzo Vescovile and Duomo that most people probably don't get to see either.   It was really pretty and they had some unique sculptures that I loved.   There was a myth that if you rubbed the belly of the angel it brought you good luck.  I struggle with some of the beliefs and myths in the cathedrals; it feels much like idolatry to me.  I mean they are gorgeous buildings and the statuary is out of this world, but the idea of Saints and rubbing statues doesn't sit with me.   God said put no one before him - that he is the way the truth and the life.  So I struggle with and worry about the millions who believe in this manner.

After this, we went to see the Palazzo Vescovile and Duomo church.  It was really quite beautiful on the inside and they were decorating for a wedding with flowers which made it smell so nice.

We then meandered on to the Roman Amphitheater that they have excavated and to additional city areas.  What was interesting about the amphitheater is that they have resumed using it for shows :)  That is so cool to me!  It really was quite a nice walk but by the end, I was ready to sit.   They took us to a cafe and we tried a cake-type thing and a coffee drink with ice and almond milk.  The cake thing was delicious, and the coffee thing was horrific, lol.

We then went back to the bus for the 2-hour drive to our hotel for the next 2 nights.

We walked about 5 miles today and we are all tired + Mama's back is trying to spasm.  Y'all pray for healing and for her back to improve.    She had a good day today and I want her to enjoy the rest of the trip.

Italy Day 6

This morning we checked out of our hotel, grabbed breakfast, and headed to the quaint beautiful village of Positano.  It was about an hour and a half away and the drive up was so pretty -the road hugs the mountainside and on the other are sheer drops to the sea.   We were in a little minibus but still, it was tight in areas with drivers being nice (imagine) and letting each other pass.

The temps have dropped dramatically so Mama is able to actually enjoy it.   The group did a walk down to the beach when we got there but the incline was steep and I really wanted to look at the quaint shops so we stayed up and did that - meandered around, took pics of the village, and just enjoyed the morning.  I got a few souvenirs, Jack got a piece of luggage to hold the souvenirs and it was a great day.

At one point Mama sat on a bench while we shopped.   A lady from England sat next to her, ginger at that, and they just chatted like they knew each other forever.  I kept peeking over to check on her and she was just chatting away :)

Towards the end of our visit, it started raining.  I bought a 5 Euro umbrella because ours were on the bus and we headed back to meet with our group.

Once joined up we rode back to the hotel to meet up with the few that didn't go with us, swapped to the large bus, and headed to Bari.    A 4-hour bus drive...  It was long but pleasant as we watched the scenery and naped.   We stopped along the way at a gas station and grabbed a sandwich - it was a madhouse to order so I left Jack to handle and went and grabbed a table.   The bread was hard and not that great but it filled us up so hey, can't complain.

We are now in Bari and we are only here one night and about to go on an excursion so I'll check in later :)

Part 2

Well, that was nice.  The town we went to is Polignano A Mare and it's this cute little fishing village by the sea.   It is medieval style with stone construction and it literally comes right up out of the cliffs.  It is so cool.   The style and painting really reminded me of Greece.   Our guide, Nicholas took us down to the cliff area with these dramatic lovely views.   We went to three different viewing spots and each was spectacular in its own way.   We then meandered around the streets and just enjoyed our time.

We ate at a restaurant across the way he recommended and I kinda wish we would have just eaten next to the cliffs at the expensive restaurant, but it was ok.   After dinner we grabbed a gelato - I had a milk chocolate kinda flavor that had nuts in it.  It was so good - While eating the ice cream we just sat on a bench and enjoyed the night.   The excursion was well worth it - I thoroughly enjoyed the evening and the temperature is so much nicer!

Now we are getting ready for bed.   We start later tomorrow - 8:30 and I'm so grateful.   Sleep well dear friends.

Italy Day 5

This morning began with breakfast at the hotel followed by a 30-minute bus ride up to Pompea.   It was a late start for our trip; we got to do breakfast at 7:30 vs. 7.  For those that know me you know mornings are not my jam, but I'm doing ok with it. Especially given with Mama's o2 I have to get up every 2 hours to get the batteries charged.   They charge so SLOW!  With all the technology available today this could be better... but people don't care about improving the lives of the elderly, let's invest in making a smaller faster iPhone instead - I mean?  Ugh!  Our society's priorities are so screwed.

We knew Pompea would be a rough day.  But the only reason we are really on this trip is so Mama can see Pompea so she did it.   These guides are amazing at looking out for her.  When the guide started talking on the bus about how many of Pompea's artifacts are in the museum in Naples vs. actually in Pompea Mama was kinda bummed.  I knew this was a bucket list item so I started talking to Nicholas about leaving the tour for the day and making our way to the museum, which we could have done but he made it where we didn't have to.   There is a mini-museum at Pompea not on the tour that has some artifact including a few of the body cast Mama really wanted to see.   They added it to our trip, I mean... just unthinkable the way they are making this special.

The day was rough.  86 degrees but felt like 95 with the sun beating down.   We put Mama in the shade wherever we could, bought her a sun hat, held an umbrella over her head when in the sun, and had her O2 on 5 and she was still really struggling.   At some parts, she was just putting one foot in front of another vs. focusing on the trip, but she was there.  She saw it.  She made it.  The ruins themselves are really quite something; it's literally a city in ruin.   With rooms and paintings still on the walls.  We went to a brothel and you can see the extremely risque paintings still existing on the walls.   It was just amazing that they were still there.

I also have to give a shout-out to our group.  Everyone is going out of their way to be nice to Mama and make sure she is ok.   Especially one couple Jim and Joan are amazing.   They are both older and his knee is bothering him so if he goes to sit down somewhere he always offers to take Mama with him.   One time the guide had an area that was hard so she escorted her out of another section.   I am not letting Mama go anywhere by herself so I was about to leave the tour and go with her - Jim stopped me and went instead.  He wanted to sit and he said he would look after her, and he did.   It brought tears to my eyes and still does.  They have been so kind - and trying to help us make the most of our trip.  It is amazing.

After Pompea we went and sat at a small cafe with water to recoup.  Jim and Joan stayed with Mama while we did a bit of souvenir shopping.   It was a market and it was obvious bartering was the norm so we bartered a bit.  I probably didn't get it as low as I could have but I got an ornament for the tree, some postcards, and a magnet for Mama.    I'm not much of a haggler but walk away and suddenly the price drops drastically.

We then went back to the bus and rested on the way to Naples.   By the time we got to Naples, the temperature had dropped a couple of degrees and it made such a difference.  I mean Mama is still tired but she was spry again, looking at the statues, loving the square, etc...

The square in Florence is much like the big one in Venice minus the cafes.   It was pretty and I could imagine big events being held there.   It was great.

We then walked down and explored a "gallery".  I was thinking it was going to be an art thing, no it was a mall in a gorgeous cathedral-type building.   We grabbed a pastry, and water and sat ... here is what is funny.  We went in to order and then when they found we wanted a seat they sent us out and waited on us with a waiter.   Not like a food court in the US that is for sure.  It was appreciated.  I asked the lady what her favorite pastry was and she pointed out 2 - I got one of each and we tried them.   Both were lemon-based and amazing!

After this, we meandered back to meet our group and headed out for a slice of Neapolitan pizza.   We sat, got a drink, and ate pizza while visiting and generally enjoying not being on our feet.  It was nice.   We then took advantage of the free bathrooms before heading out to explore Naples a bit.   We mainly just walked down to see the Castle from the outside and walked around the square a bit more so I could get some better photos.  Mama and Jack went to sit on the steps and I explored.   It was so hot though I ended up joining them in the shade.  We didn't have too long and Naples is a bit of a throng of people shopping.  I'm sure there are other sections but that is where we were.

We also did do a drive up to see Naples from the top and I got some great pictures overlooking Naples.  It was gorgeous.

Once we met back up with our group we headed back to the bus and to the hotel.   Where I promptly got a hot bath and just soaked.   Now we are sitting on the patio enjoying the breeze and sea while waiting on dinner.   We meet up with our group and have a preplanned dinner here at the hotel.   It's going to be nice and then we get to pack up to leave this hotel in the AM.

Overall it was an exhausting but great day!

Italy Day 4

Today was another hot one, but good!   When I researched Italy they said this time of year it's the 70s, well it's been high 80's to mid 90's with humidity of over 80%.  So - it's hot and humid.  It seems everyone on our tour is suffering a bit with it, but especially Mama.   The day though was one where she could rest in spots and overall it was a nice day.

We got up and ate breakfast at the hotel.  I overheard someone say you could not take your carry-on during the ride today so we scrambled after breakfast to repack what we absolutely had to have in things that we could keep on a person comfortably as we walked.  Typically we can leave a bag on the bus to use throughout the day, but not today.   Anyway, with that we were almost late for the bus this morning... it was close :( but we made it!

Then we rode to the ferry and hopped on a boat to Capri.   Masks were required on the boat and we wore them as we entered, however below it was fairly uncrowded so we took them off.   It was a nice ride at the beginning.  The boats are really moving so I'm glad we opted for inside, at 40 miles an hour I bet up top was all kinds of windy.   The ferry stopped for a second stop and a lot more people came on so I insisted on the N95 mask.  Masks in general aren't really helpful unless it's a properly fitted N95 which these are... so, the mask went on.   It was miserable in the heat, as more people came on the A/C just couldn't keep up and with Mama's breathing issues we were all ready to get off the dang boat.    If we test positive for COVID they will not allow us back into the US so I'm being super cautious, even if it does make us miserable and those with me irritated.

Once we docked at Capri and headed off the boat it was a bit of a trek to the Funicular to go up to the top.   Once again masks were required and we were crammed into these things like sardines to get up... it was a hassle and a half.   The walk to get up to them is these long steps, not really a ramp, but also not starts - just ramp type thing, step, ramp type thing, step, etc..  so it's just weird and awkward for someone with O2 being pulled behind them.  Then the tight quarters with no seats... I love Europe and Italy, but overall they are not handicapped or elderly-friendly when it comes to structures at all.  People help us but their actual normal accommodations aren't great.

Anyway once at the top we had already been warned that it was a good walk down to the gardens and then a walk back up the hill.   The hill wasn't really all that steep, but if you had to be on a timetable I could see how it would be a problem.   Mama elected to stay at the top and people watch/shop while we went down.  In the end, I was grateful for her decision.  She is really struggling with this heat and I think the hill may have been too much in it.  Any other day she could have done it, been tired maybe, but not in this heat.

Anyway, this trip is about more than dealing with O2 issues - it just occupies a lot of my thoughts.

Jack and I did walk down with the group in Capri.  The guide was telling us stuff, some about the flora and the history.  I'll be honest I kinda tuned him out and just enjoyed the scenery while taking my photos.   At the end was a terrific garden with gorgeous views of the water and Capri.   The flowers and plants were all gorgeous all over the island, but especially in the gardens.  Plus a seagull was playing in the fountain and a cat.  I mean all is right with the world if there is a cat.

Jack and I then meandered back, shopping along the way.   I really wanted a Capri t-shirt at this one shop, but they didn't have my size so I settled for a few other little trinkets, etc...  as we made our way back up to Mama.   Once at the top I found her seated where we left her in the shade watching the people   She said she didn't want to give up her prime real estate, but I convinced her to walk a bit and do a little shopping down one street while we waited.   We got a few little things and headed back to the group.

They then took us down and over to the Tyrrhenian Sea sea where we could dip our feet in if we wanted.   We all had tennis shoes on so elected not to do so... just too much hassle for the 10 minutes and we can get in the water at the hotel.

While the group was playing in the water I ran over and grabbed a t-shirt at another little shop.  With the design, I doubt it will last long in the wash, but it's pretty.

Once everyone had gotten their feet wet as desired we headed back to the boat for another short ride over to Sorrento.   Once in Sorrento, our guide took us to a brief demonstration on how to make wood inlay tables, and then we were let go to go shop, eat lunch, and explore.    We ate at a local restaurant known for its pizza.  Jack and I got pizza - Mama a porkchop.   Yep a porkchop and fries, lol.  Everyone enjoyed their food even if the staff was less than friendly.

It was funny one of the ladies in our group was at another table.  She's nice enough but has an opinion about everything and lets you know it...  She is friendly and she tells you with a smile, but she makes sure you know her opinion and her knowledge of every subject.  So she was sampling the Italian wine and telling them that they hadn't let it breathe for 4 hours and therefore it wasn't any good.   I know nothing about wine, but I do know that waitress wanted to spit into hers...     We tried to be extra friendly to her in recompense, not sure it helped but hey.   Jack also helped her get her scooter (yes the waitress) over a hump to drive someone home...  It was sweet of him.

As a side note; everyone here drives scooters and they park them wherever...

After lunch, we meandered down a little pedestrian alley and did some more shopping.  It reminded me of the alley in Harry Potter.  The heat was intense so we found Mama somewhere to sit in the shade while Jack and I continued our exploring /shopping.   Once complete we headed back up and all got some gelato to eat while we waited for the group.

Overall it was an enjoyable day.  The islands really are beautiful and I would have loved to have had a bit more time in both on a cooler day.

Mama came back to the hotel after and went to rest and Jack and I ended our day with a swim in the hotel pool and dinner watching the sunset.     Now to rest up for another full day tomorrow.

Italy Day 3

This morning we got up super early; luggage had to be out of our room by 7 and we had to eat breakfast and be on the bus by 7:45.    We had the continental breakfast at the hotel - we sat with a nice couple from NJ - Jim and Jane, I hope it was Jane.  My memory of names is atrocious.  Anyway, they are part of our tour group and it was nice to chit-chat.

This time I got smart and filled up one of the milk jugs with coffee so I would have refills.   Breakfast was a nice event and then we were on the bus.  It is a smaller tour so we are all able to spread out and have our own window seats; which is nice.

We drove out of Rome and went for a private tour of the Papal Palace and the Barberini Gardens.   We were really quite blessed.   The walk up the hill to the Palace is quite steep and normally there is no choice but to walk it as the bus service is unreliable.   This morning, God looked out for us though and the bus pulled up right as we did.  So for 1 Euro Mama and I were able to ride a trolly to the top.  I'm not sure she would have been able to enjoy the rest of the day had she walked up the hill as it was extreme.   The guide said he has never had the bus arrive at that time.  God was really looking out.

When we got up to the palace they allowed Mama and I to avoid the steps and go through another section which again was a blessing!   The guide is really going out of his way to make sure she has a great trip and for that I am appreciative.

We walked through the palace which is owned by the Vatican and is his summer home.   The guards had to be with us at all times as we went through the roped-off areas.  They never rushed me when I took my pictures though; I had to keep up with the group of course, but they were kind.

We then went to the gardens and took a trolly tour of it.  I wish I could have gotten out and walked the grounds as they were really pretty, but that was not allowed.  We were able to get out a couple of times and take a few photos.  Mama was quick to go to the shade each time - the heat here is intense and it's hitting her hard, but I think she is having a good time.  At the end of the tour, we were provided a nice lunch outside in a gazebo-type thing.  The breeze was blowing and it was really peaceful.

After lunch I went to walk around a bit and the tour guide warned me not to go far - he literally said you are on Vatican property and they have snipers, they do not play with people wandering.  He grinned but at the same time, he was quite serious I was not to go off on my own at all.   The guard motioned I could go a bit and to the right, while speaking Italian, our guide translated that he was giving me permission to go stand on the balcony they have to take a few pictures which I did and quickly came back.  The last thing I need is problems with the Vatican police.   It was really a pretty peak with great views and the gardens were great.   I loved the fact that while some parts were reserved, others were extremely wild and allowed to be that way, I loved it!

After lunch, they gave us a ride to the exit and we had to walk down the hill to the bus.  Even going down with only a couple of small inclines was rough on her and by the end, she was hurting.  Jack walked up the hill so he has more steps than Mama and myself and he is currently at 10,000.   So I'd say she probably has done 6,000... give or take given as Jack and I have also walked the grounds here.   2 years ago she wouldn't have broken a sweat - well she would have because of the heat, but it's showing that she is slowing a bit, and it's a bit hard to see.  It's the truth though - we knew it was coming.  Just hard to see it's here.

But enough of that...  after our walk we then drove a good distance to our current location on the Sorrento Coast.  This hotel is literally right on the coast and I'm sitting on a patio staring over the Tyrrhenian Sea at Mount Vesuvius.  I can step down and be on a small beach that is next to rocks.  The sand seems different than on the FL coast - it is rougher and not as white; rockier I guess.

The hotel itself other than the location is nothing special, but well the location makes up for it :)  We have the evening here and plan to just rest, eat some dinner at the hotel, and well chill.   Mama is currently napping and trying to get her leg swelling to go down a bit.

Italy Day 2 Part 2

We met our group at 5 for the introduction to the host and the tour.   We have a total of 16 in our group and it seems like an interesting mix of folks.   I won't say we hit it off right away with everyone, but they all seem nice enough, by the end of the tour I'm sure we will make fast friends.

Mama was fine when we left for the meeting, but right before it started I don't know if her blood pressure plummeted or what, but she was dizzy and saw a few spots.  We got her back on her 02 and she kinda rallied.... ok not really she faked it.   She was nodding off as he spoke and even some at dinner.   The doctors changed her blood pressure meds to try and prevent this but I think we may have to revisit the issue.   During dinner, she did rally some and joined in some of the conversations.  I'm really hoping a good night's rest sets her right for the rest of the tour.  Tomorrow is quite a bit of walking and much of it uphill.  Lord, I pray you to help her.

Dinner itself was several courses and pleasurable.  I can't say I loved it, but it was good. I especially liked the blackberry tart they had for dessert, it was yum.

Tomorrow we have a full day that starts at 7 AM so I'm logging off and getting some rest.   See you guys later :)

Italy Day 2 Part 1

Well, today our adventure officially began :)  We got up this morning after resting (kinda resting) last night.  I personally had a rough night, caffeine withdrawal due to the time change presents with a headache that mimics a migraine in all the worst ways.   But it's all good.  We rested and got up around 7:30 with the plan to go grab a bite at 8:30.

When I asked the hotel concierge about breakfast recommendations I found our hotel included breakfast so we ate the continental.   Now, this continental isn't like the ones at US hotels.  It's a buffet, but it has a lot of options.   Italians, in general, don't do breakfast like us so while there were scrambled eggs, and bacon to appease the Americans I stuck with the fruit and pound cake-like thing they had.   I tried a couple of the other croissant thingies, but they were not for me.   Jack had cereal and some fruit and Mama had the more traditional American meal with some pound cake.   We both did American Coffee.  The coffee cups here are so tiny though so I got up like 6 times just for coffee, by the end of breakfast though my headache had mostly abated.   It is still a twinge of it but nothing like last night.

After we ate we left and meandered our way to the Capitoline Museums.   It is a little over a mile from the hotel so we walked it and I'm grateful we did.  We got to see the colosseum again, part of it, and some Roman ruins, and just enjoyed the experience.  At the end to get to the Museum we had to go up a hill and that was pretty rough for Mama.  Her COPD has progressed and this 90+ heat is not easy; it makes it really flare up.   That being said she hung with us.  We stopped often, which was fine with me - more picture time and finally made it to the museum.   She was sitting and I decided to take pictures of the courtyard and I'm grateful I did because that is when I saw the rather lengthy line for the museum.

I went ahead and got in it and attempted to call Jack to let him know, but no phone call would go through.  So I waved and waved until Mama saw me and then they wandered over and waited with me in line.   By this time it is really quite warm and we needed to find Mama a chair.  She kept sitting on the wall along the way but we needed to rest.

Once inside, we got in free today, some type of special event - which was awesome.  Anyway, I digress.  We kept asking for a chair or bench for her and were getting nowhere.  The language barrier sometimes can be a real challenge.     I went in search of an English Map that would help and Jack helped Mama get a chair, one of the museum employees who monitor the rooms for people misbehaving let her sit in hers, thankfully.   She sat there for a good while getting her O2 back and Jack went in search of water.   After he got back with the water and she had gotten a tiny bit of a second wind we hunted for the bathroom.   Nothing in this museum is easy to find, the signs with arrows and English were even hard to understand, but finally, everyone goes (I accidentally went in the men's I think - I had to hover to use it) and we were on our way to actually see the museum.

We spent about 2 hours meandering, looking at sculptures, and just enjoying ourselves.   Mama kept asking me what stuff was and I kept saying I don't know.    They had some of the signs in English but not many.   But it was cool inside which was nice.   They have this one open area auditorium-like room with super large sculptures in it which was neat.

After wandering around a bit we made our way to the terrace cafe and had a nice lunch looking over Rome.   The wait staff wasn't especially friendly but the view was nice, the sandwich yummy, and the chair heavenly.   They always bring out sparking and natural water to the table which I didn't know so I filled our water with sparkling and had to ask for a replacement glass, he wasn't happy with me.

We then planned to go see Santa Maria in Aracoeli but the stairs were insane.  It is the Aracoeli steps built to commemorate the plague and they were no joke.  I think there is a handicapped way to get there but we didn't know what it was so we just meandered n took pictures of the Victor Emanuel Monument buildings which are also really cool.   By this time it was about 2:30, Mama's 02 batteries were dead and we all were ready for showers.  I negotiated with a taxi to take us the mile or so back to our hotel and here we are.

Overall it was a nice day - hot and I was a little worried about Mama with the heat but nice.

Tonight we meet up with our tour group for dinner and go from there :)

Until then :)

Some general observations I want to remember:

* Rome is dirtier than I remember. Maybe it was a detail I just didn't pick up on before but there seems to be trash and litter everywhere.

* I remember the Italians being especially friendly.   So far on this trip that has been about a 50/50 split.  Some have been great and understand we don't speak Italian.  Others have been kinda huffy or ignore you when you try to communicate... the mood toward Americans certainly seems to have shifted, at least in Rome.

* Mama is worried she is keeping us from having a good time and that's not the case.  This trip is rough, though they all have been, this one I can tell her age more.  I knew it was coming - old age and COPD suck!  Just saying.

Italy Day 1

Today was travel, travel, and more travel.   I worked Friday the 3rd until around 11:30 while Jack did the final packing/things around the house.  Then we ate Cracker Barrell for lunch and began our adventure.

The travel time was 3:30 PM (get to the airport at 1:30) to 6 AM our time; it was noon time here in Italy.  By the time we got checked into the hotel, I had been up for about 24 hours.   We all grabbed a few winks on the plane but they were few and far between - it was coach and tight, especially for a 9-hour flight.  I mean I was broader than the seat and I'm not a big person.... come on Delta, you can do better.

Overall the flight experience wasn't bad though.  The check-in guy was amazing and helped us fix seats where we were all together from where it was changed after a reschedule.   Thanks to the lovely passenger and his wife for working with us.  Then when we got to Italy the wheelchair man was incredible, whisked us past the mile-long customs line, straight to our luggage, and then to our tour.  No fuss no mess - just easy peasy.  Without him, we probably would have been at the airport at least 2 additional hours

Globus gave us a brief ride over to our hotel and we chatted with some guests who were taking another tour.  Mama's room wasn't quite ready as it was only 1:30 PM their time, but we were able to get into ours and rest.   Hers was ready within an hour and they brought us her key - not called us to come and get it, but brought it to us!   I mean, service.

We all got settled and slept for a few hours.  Mama decided to keep sleeping and just start fresh tomorrow.  Jack and I however got up, walked around the area down to the Fontana Delle Naiadi fountain, and just well - wandered.  It felt good to stretch our legs.   We then meandered down a street filled with restaurants trying to decide what we wanted.  I didn't want anything really heavy so pasta was out.   We ended up coming back to the hotel and taking their suggestion to eat at a pizza place called La Gallina Bianca (the white chicken).  We both tried pizzas we don't typically see at home and just loved it.   The atmosphere was cozy and while our main waitress was unattentive the other staff were great.   It was a nice and perfect end to our day.

Now we are back at the hotel, in bed, and planning out our day tomorrow.  We don't meet with Globus until 5 so we have the entire day to ourselves to explore :)

Until then - good night :)

Florida Family Weekend

Weekend trips to visit family are nothings I typically blog about.  Typically it's the big planned vacations that make it on these pages, but this weekend has been so nice thus far.   We are tired and well tired, but it's so good to be down here with family and the weather could not be better.

We left yesterday evening from the house.   God was really looking out for us.  We decided to eat dinner at the house as we had leftovers and then head down to my brothers.   I had the bright idea or rather God gave me the idea to throw my leftovers outside vs. in the trash.  I didn't want the trash smelling up the house... now keep in mind throwing my leftovers out like that is something I never do, but this time I was like - yea do that.   Well, we had some power brown out's a few minutes earlier and the sprinkler was on at Mama's porch and not spraying properly.  If I hadn't noticed it I have no doubt we would have come home to water damage, but God made sure I saw it.  He directed my thoughts and my actions - so thank you for the Godwink as my friend calls them :)  I love that he is always protecting and guiding us.

We then headed on down.  Jack drove and Mama and I mainly chilled.   It was rainy and I'm grateful for his driving.   We arrived safely and after a few brief moments of visiting, we all went to bed.

I woke up bright and early (7ish) and went for coffee @ Dunkin with Kaylee.   We then came back, visited, and got started on our day.   It all began with a nice breakfast at Beach Diner, followed by a trip to a plantation house - Kingsland Plantation.  It was about a 40-minute drive and we took 2 cars so I grabbed a bit of a catnap.   The driveway into the plantation was beautiful with large Oak trees filled with moss hanging over the drive.

Once on the plantation, we explored a bit and then went and just sit by the water and visited.   The day was beautiful and just sitting there talking with the view was really nice.   We then headed back for a bit more chill time.

After everyone rested for a couple of hours we headed out to the beach so Mama could feed the seagulls, which she loves to do.   And then went to dinner at a local seafood restaurant.   The food overall was good - the crab legs were a little dry, but everything else was amazing.   The servers knew my family's name, and well - it was just a nice experience overall.

Tomorrow we will go to church with my niece and then probably head home after visiting a bit.   It's been such a nice trip so far.  The past few weeks and the next few weeks are cra-cra schedule-wise, but it's all good stuff.  We are grateful for the reprieve and the visit :)   Now to do a bit of my Bible study and call it a night.  Sleep well blog land.

Maine - Day 9

It rained today; if it was going to rain today was really the best day for it as we needed to travel so I'm grateful.  We've really ...
